TREASURES OF JAPAN

This summer the New Jersey delegation of the People to People Student Ambassador Program will be traveling to Japan.

The student travel program dates back more than half a century to its founding by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. Eisenhower was acting on his firm belief that direct interaction between ordinary citizens around the world can promote cultural understanding and world peace.

Join us as we travel through Japan on an amazing journey to get to know the country, the culture and each other.

Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for Atomic Bomb Victims

Today was one of the most solemn occassions of our trip.  We went to the Nagasaki National Peace Museum where we heard Akio Sakit, an 80 year old survivor of the nuclear bomb attack on Nagasaki, speak about his experience on that day. We were deeply moved to hear how his life was changed forever in a split second.  Today he is healthy and speaks often about his life.  He believes that the only way to prevent nuclear war is by telling his story.

After our meeting with Akio, we were able to tour the museum and reflect on the devastating impact that the nuclear bomb had on Nagasaki.  In the afternoon the students met Japanese students.  They talked about their ideas on how young people can make a difference for peace.
